Open for Nominations: Dean of PGR’s Commendations for Excellence in Academic Citizenship & Excellence in PGR Supervision
The Dean of PGR and the Doctoral College are delighted to open nominations for the 2026 Dean’s Commendation schemes for postgraduate researchers and supervisors.
We welcome nominations for PGRs who have displayed excellence in Academic Citizenship, and for supervisors for the award for Excellence in PGR Supervision.
The Academic Citizenship Commendation recognises PGRs who contribute to a supportive and inclusive research community. The Supervision award celebrates supervisors who go above and beyond basic role requirements.
Nominations are open to all – PGRs, Directors of PGR, support teams, and supervisors.

Submit your nomination by completing the below forms by 12.00 (midday) on Tuesday 5 May 2026:
Award outcomes will be announced at the end of May, with receptions at Streatham on Wednesday 3 June and Penryn on Thursday 4 June.
Criteria
Reasons for nomination may include, but are not limited to, excellence?across multiple criteria:?
- Providing excellent and effective supervision?to postgraduate research students across the?different stages?and levels of a PGR programme, from?initial?meetings to final examination and completion.??
- Working effectively as part of a supervisory team to provide postgraduate research students with clear and coherent guidance.?
- Providing supportive and inclusive supervision and supervisory support that is sensitive to the diverse needs of individual research students. This may include (but is not restricted to) tailored support for part-time, distance-learning, international, disabled or chronically ill, neurodivergent students, students who are traditionally under-represented within academia, and student parents?and carers.?
- Providing constructive and?timely?feedback to PGRs?on their work, to?facilitate?their development.
- Providing excellent support to PGRs to overcome challenges and disruptions to their research, either personal or research related.???
- Providing supportive guidance and signposting to relevant networking and training opportunities. to?facilitate?students’?research,?professional?development?and employability.??
- Delivering high-quality training to PGRs, either individually or collectively, (e.g. for DTPs, Faculty or Researcher Development workshops).???
- Mentoring and supporting new supervisors, or sharing good practice with colleagues.?
- Developing innovative approaches to postgraduate research supervision and shaping emerging best practice.??
- Providing inclusive and supportive guidance for applicants to?facilitate?PGR recruitment, including for departmental/Faculty/DTP recruitment activities.??

Nominations apply to the 2025/26 academic year.??
The deadline to?submit?your nomination is?5 May 2026.?
Eligibility
Supervisors must meet the following criteria to be eligible for an award:?
- Supervise a PGR student at the 樱花动漫. They must be recorded as a supervisor in SITS. The FTE of the supervisor or student will not?preclude?anyone from being nominated – we are looking at quality of supervision, not quantity.?
- Supervisors must be up to date with all supervisory training (as confirmed by the DDPGR)?.
- External supervisors and pastoral tutors will not be eligible for this award.??
- Supervision of OAS or visiting PGRs will not be eligible for this award.??
- Department DPGRs are not precluded from nomination, but any nomination must focus on their supervision and not their role as DDPGR.?
- Faculty DPGRs cannot be nominated as they will form part of the awarding committee.
Criteria
?Reasons for nomination may include, but are not limited to, excellence?across multiple criteria: ?
- Contributing to a supportive and inclusive research environment in their department/ centre/ faculty/ university, e.g. research seminars, peer-to-peer training).??
- Contributing to a supportive and inclusive research community in their department/ centre/ faculty/ university (e.g. peer support groups, wellbeing or social activities, liaison forums).
- Organisation, development and/or delivery of student-led workshops, symposia, reading groups, research culture resources.?
- Mentoring and supporting less experienced students/peers.?
Nominations can be?submitted?by anyone – PGRs, Directors of PGR, PGR Support Teams, Supervisors, Professional Service staff & teams.??
Please note that PGRs are not able to self-nominate.
Eligibility
All?current PGRs, or those who?submitted?their thesis/dissertation?for examination?on or after?07 October 2025 may be nominated.??
PGRs who have been in paid positions related to?academic citizenship, research community and/or research culture development?may be nominated, but holding a paid position would not automatically qualify someone for receipt of an award.??
