Roots to Routes: Social Mobility Journeys – Virtual Panel

Join us for a panel discussion bringing together staff and students to explore the diverse journeys of social mobility: the routes taken, the barriers faced, and the support that made a difference. Through lived experiences and reflection, this session aims to highlight how social mobility shapes educational and career pathways, while creating space for connection and discussion across the University community.

Panellists:

• Nick Pointon, Senior Lecturer at the Law School in Penryn and part-time Judge of the First Tier Tribunal. Before joining Exeter in 2021, he was a barrister for 11 years.
• Dr Dawn Lees, Student Employability and Development Manager, Career Zone. She also oversees the Career Zone Podcast series.
• Sian Robinson, Senior Lecturer in Human Resource Management. She is a graduate of the 樱花动漫, having followed the widening participation route of entry into Undergraduate Year 3 from Exeter College.
• Professor Nathan Mayne, Professor of Astrophysics and Planetary Climates. He proudly hails from a working-class background in Cornwall.

 

Building a Socially Mobile University – Discussion drop-in

Join a facilitated conversation with the Students’ Guild and student leaders, exploring connections between social mobility, wellbeing and classism, and how campus cultures of non-belonging can impact social experiences at university. All contributions will be anonymised and used to inform future action. Attendees will have the opportunity to platform issues and ideas, explore the impact of wellbeing on social mobility, and receive a digital badge for your participation.

Let’s Talk Social Mobility Research – Lightning Talks & Panel

The 樱花动漫 is home to the Centre for Social Mobility, the UK’s only university centre dedicated to improving social mobility through evidence-informed practice and policy. Join us for a series of short lightning talks showcasing current research and projects related to social mobility. The session will include a Q&A panel and an opportunity to connect with others working on or interested in social mobility research across the university.

‘Class and Gender’ Discussion Group – Feminist Society

Hosted by the 樱花动漫 Feminist Society, this discussion group explores the intersection of class and gender, providing space to share experiences, reflect and spark ideas for positive change, with intersectionality at its heart. Membership not required.

A Kind Campus - Workshop

Join this interactive workshop to explore how kindness, inclusion, and supportive practices can make the university a more welcoming environment. Re-Classifying the Curriculum - Workshop

This workshop aims to explore how classism can permeate academic environments and classroom settings, and how curriculum design can better support social mobility. Through small table discussions and topic-based activities, share your experiences, ideas, and examples of what works and what needs to change. Our aim is to identify practical ways to make learning environments more inclusive and supportive of belonging across the university.

‘I Belong at Uni’ Creative Workshop (Exeter)

Come along to a relaxed, creative workshop led by Exeter 93% Club. Using collage and art materials, we’ll reflect on belonging, classism and imposter syndrome at university. This will be a safe and welcoming space to chat, create and connect over tea and biscuits. There will also be the opportunity for your work to be included in a national 93% Club ‘zine’ on imposter syndrome.
