Module description

The main purpose of this module is to provide students with a broad introduction to people management, the role played in organisations by the Human Resource Management and HRD functions, the management of performance in organisations and the strategic context in which contemporary HR management takes place. Starting with an analysis of the way that approaches to the management of people have evolved over time, we go on to focus on some major contemporary issues such as motivating and engaging people, change management, effective leadership and Human Resource Management strategy.? Throughout we will consider the different ways in which Human Resource Management can add value for organisations and contribute to the achievement of superior business performance. In this module we are also going to introduce two important areas of HR practice: performance management and reward management. This module also focuses on contemporary developments in the business environment and the way these are affecting people management practice and the world of work more generally. We will be looking at and debating longer term trends such as globalisation, technologies, demographics, social trends and wider political and economic developments. We will also be focusing in detail on developments in labour markets, employment regulation, government policy and trade unions. Our purpose is to reflect on the practical impact these developments are having on the practice of Human Resource Management and to debate their possible future impact.
