Cluster teams

Our Cluster Teams are Research Development and Management and Research Finance specialists who provide research development and management support and advice to academics. They do this across the research project lifecycle from idea to impact, supporting both the research development and financial elements. This includes identifying funding opportunities, coordinating bid development and costings, and supporting live projects and post project activities.

For all notifications of plans to apply for grant applications, including very early stage ideas, please add these to the  as a new research idea. Guidance on Adding Research Projects Ideas to Worktribe is available .

There are five cluster teams who each have enhanced funder expertise (see above). Three are faculty facing (ESE, HLS and HASS Clusters) and support Exeter-based academics within those faculties, one provides specific support for Cornwall-based academics  (Cornwall cluster) and we have one cluster that specialises in specific support grants for EU and major international funding bodies across all areas (EU & International Cluster) 

Clusters also contain specific faculty/ funder facing roles and responsibilities: 

  • Cluster Leads: Cluster leads lead the funder clusters and are the point of escalation for project based concerns, For faculty-facing clusters, the cluster lead works with the APVC-R&I to strategically manage the project portfolio 

  • Faculty Finance Leads: Each faculty-facing cluster has a faculty finance lead who supports the head of finance in each faculty with financial planning associated with the research portfolio 

  • Department/ Institute Leads: All departments and University Research Institutes have a named Research Development contact who works with the DoRIs/ Institute Manager to support the strategic development of their research portfolio  

  • Funder Expertise: Funder clusters have responsibility for having the strategic expertise and understanding of the University鈥檚 profile with specific major funders. Whilst individual bids are supported appropriately across all our clusters (depending on PI homing) the support for the Funder Advisory Networks (FANS) and for specific understanding of the funder sits with specific clusters.
