Andrew's background is in computational cognitive science and he has previously held academic appointments in computer science, psychology and business. His research focus is on human-AI collaboration and on how the next generation of artificial intelligence technologies can be engineered so as to work with people.

Tarje trained as a (geo-)physicist and his research interests span a wide range of wave phenomena, as related to earthquakes and other vibrational sources, planetary interiors, numerical methods and supercomputing, machine learning, inverse theory, data science, wildlife monitoring, complex ecosystems, soils and sustainable agriculture, the cryosphere, and solar system science.
