Overview of key findings
In this section, we present the key findings from two stages of our study:
- Stage 1: Survey findings
- Stage 3: Classroom observation to build 'Telling Case' studies
For Stage 1, we provide an overview of key survey findings. These include details about the respondents; the pedagogic approaches that inform their teaching of narrative writing; and their use of resources - including digital resources - to promote narrative writing. For further details about the survey, please contact Clare Dowdall.

For Stage 3, we present a full set of Pedagogical Principles that have been constructed from our analyses of two Telling Case Studies. These Pedagogical Principles are presented under 8 focus headings:
- Teacher Role
- Pedagogical Approach
- Story Writing World
- Resource Use
- Teacher Expectations
- Writing process
- Children’s Engagement and Attention
- Collaboration
You will find the two Telling Cases (Year 3 and Year 5-6) presented in detail in dedicated sections on the website.
Please note: Stage 2, Planning Workshop did not yield data for discrete presentation, as this informed the construction of each Telling Case.
