Event details

Ana Frankenberg-Garcia (University of Surrey)

Dictionary support for writing

Dictionaries have traditionally been used to look up what words mean, how they are spelled, or how they can be translated. However, many of today’s dictionaries provide additional information that goes beyond spellings and definitions (or translations, in the case of bilingual dictionaries). In this talk, I will demonstrate how dictionaries can help writers, with specific reference to researchers and students writing about their work in English. I will first review some of the lexical resources available to help academic English writers. Next, I will introduce ColloCaid, a text editor with an integrated dictionary of collocations (or word combinations) that has been designed to help academic writers enhance the vocabulary and fluency of their texts as they write. The ColloCaid prototype is free to use and can be accessed at .

ColloCaid was funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), ref. .
